Mariam Sanogo, a rural farmer in Mali, has resolved herself to life’s harsh reality — sometimes she will simply be hungry. The family’s crop yields have diminished in recent years as food prices have risen to unaffordable levels and finding food is a serious problem in her community.
"There are some days that you will sleep on an empty stomach," she says. "If the family meal is not sufficient, you have nothing, and you will go to bed hungry."
But try as she might, Mariam cannot reconcile this fact for her 19-month-old daughter, Djeneba Dramé.

"Since I weaned her four months ago, she has never been well," Mariam says. She needed far more food and nutrients than her family could produce in their fields. She began to experience fever, swelling and a complete loss of energy before Mariam took her to the hospital.
I worry about what might happen to my daughter because of this sickness,” she says. “This is a great sorrow.
